Residents near the Brazos River should to take immediate action.
RICHMOND, TX – Fort Bend County Judge Robert Hebert has upgraded the voluntary evacuation order for certain residents in low-lying areas surrounding the Brazos River to a mandatory evacuation order. Residents in these areas should quickly gather your loved ones, pets, emergency kit and necessities before leaving the evacuation zones as soon as safely possible.
At the time of release, the National Weather Service (NWS) currently forecasts record flood events on the Brazos River. The NWS forecast for the Brazos River at Richmond projects a river levels of 56.1 feet, a projection nearly two feet above above the 2016 record.
"Harvey continues to batter Fort Bend County," said County Judge Hebert. "Residents who flooded last year know how serious this situation is. I am issuing a mandatory evacuation for the potentially affected areas along the Brazos river and urge residents to take action now to protect themselves, their family, and their property."
Judge Hebert continued, “Many of our residents want and need somewhere safe to stay locally, so we have worked with the Red Cross and set up nearby shelters. I urge all of our residents to work quickly and respond to this call, we have two shelters set up now, one in Richmond at Sacred Heart and one in Houston at the George R. Brown convention center. We will continue taking every necessary step for the safety and security of our residents against these incoming floods."
If you are a resident in the evacuation zones and you do not have transportation or a place to go – PLEASE CALL 211 and request assistance with the evacuation.
The Fort Bend County Office of Emergency Management reminds affected residents to follow all local law enforcement instructions and directed routes within the county. When driving, avoid all standing water, Turn Around, Don’t Drown – even small areas of water can prove dangerous.
