Know the Signs

Many people who are exploited for labor or sex are never identified and miss the chance to connect with support. Our community can interrupt that reality by learning how to spot indicators of trafficking and acting when something feels wrong.

Possible warning signs include:

  • Appears underfed or in poor physical condition
  • A minor seen with an older, dominating companion
  • Young person suddenly spending time with much older peers or partner
  • No access to personal documents like ID, passport, or birth certificate
  • Someone else controls their work or earnings
  • Abrupt shifts in behavior or mood, especially in teens
  • Unexplained tattoos or markings, injuries, scars
  • Lured by misleading job offers or romantic promises
  • Avoids eye contact or won’t speak for themselves
  • History of running away, truancy, homelessness
  • Substance use concerns or untreated infections
  • Restricted movement, not allowed to leave independently
  • No control over finances or personal spending
