Environmental Crimes Unit

The Fort Bend County Environmental Crimes Unit (ECU) is responsible for enforcing laws that safeguard the waters of the state, land, and natural resources. The Unit investigates violations that threaten public health and the environment, working to hold individuals and organizations accountable for unlawful activity.

Most ECU investigations originate from referrals made by law enforcement partners, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, and other county offices. The Unit also responds to information provided by citizens and community groups, in addition to initiating independent investigations.

The ECU is staffed with commissioned peace officer criminal investigators and an abatement coordinator. Together, they investigate environmental crimes, collect, and preserve evidence, and provide legal support to ensure successful prosecution.

In criminal environmental cases, charges may be filed against corporations, individuals, or both. Convictions can result in penalties that include jail time, fines, restitution, community service, and probation.
