JOHN V. MORTON – FIRST SHERIFF OF FORT BEND COUNTY. Sheriff Morton, first Sheriff of Fort Bend County died in the line of duty on February 7, 1843 at the age of 47. Sheriff Morton, the son of an original Texas settler, was shot and killed during a gun battle in Richmond, Texas.
